Semana Santa, Holy Week

Easter is just one measly day in the week long celebration that is Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Why celebrate one day when you could for seven? I went with three other friends to the town of Mompox, a calm colonial town on the Magdalena river with friendly people and tons of rocking chairs. In exchange for the Easter Bunny, I got my fill of bloody Jesus statues on floats; no chocolate this year, but instead little cups of mango, coco, pineapple, and beans (yuck!) mixed with sugar; and instead of spotting Easter eggs, we floated down the river on the lookout for iguanas and monkeys.

Wednesday night people went to the cemetary and lit thousands of candles for the dead

While the trip there took 5 hours, the 11 hours it took to return was another whole adventure in itself. After taking a cab and fishing boat and waiting 3 hours for a bus that would never leave, we got into a van and waited another 2 hours. It’s going to be so strange to return to a land where reservations can be made and furthermore upheld. Along the way, the driver did some personal errands, one woman got out to talk on her phone for 15 minutes where there was service, and a baby threw up and had to be changed.
